Canadian hockey player out for season

Canadian ice hockey player John Tavares has been ruled out for the remainder of the NHL season.

The 23-year-old New York Islanders captain picked up an injury while competing for his country at the Winter Olympics, clashing into the boards following a collision with Latvia's Arturs Kulda.

"John Tavares has an MCL and meniscus tear in his left knee," team spokesman Kimber Auerbach wrote in an email on Thursday. "He will remain with Team Canada for the remainder of Olympics and return home after for further evaluation."

Canada will face Team USA in the semi-finals of the men's hockey tournament in Sochi.
