The Spaniard is competing in his first tournament since turning professional after last week's US Open, but he continues to defy the odds on his debut in the paid ranks.
Rahm hit six birdies to keep his position at the top of the leaderboard but he has been joined by Billy Hurley III, who finished his round on Friday with a score of 64.
The duo hold a three-shot advantage over Vijay Singh, while Webb Simpson and Ernie Els are among a group of four players a shot further adrift.
Scotland's Martin Laird is the leading British player but he only sits in 36th position.
