Holmes four clear at WGC

JB Holmes has opened up a four-shot lead after carding a blemish-free 62 on day one of the World Golf Championships at Doral.

The 32-year-old, who was part of Paul Azinger's winning Ryder Cup team in 2008, started well with birdies at the first and third holes before sinking two more at seven and eight to reach the turn at four-under-par.

Holmes then picked up shots at the 10th and 11th as well as managing an eagle three at the 12th as the American began to open a gap on the rest of the field.

His round finished with further birdies at 16 and 17 to finish with a 10-under-par 62, one short of the course record set by Stephen Ames in 2000.

While Holmes enjoyed a near-perfect day, world number one Rory McIlroy endured another difficult one in Florida.

After missing the cut at the Honda Classic last week, the Northern Irishman could only manage a one-over-par 73, to trail by 11 strokes.
