Paul Waring on course for first victory after late surge earns two-shot lead

Paul Waring birdies two of the last three holes to take a two-shot lead ahead of the final round of the Portugal Masters.

Paul Waring is well placed to record his first victory on the European Tour thanks to two late birdies in the third round of the Portugal Masters.

Waring, who was one of three men to share the overnight lead, birdied 16 and 17 to move two clear of the field in Faro ahead of Sunday's final round.

The 28-year-old from Birkenhead was level par through the opening nine but then birdied four holes on the back to finish with a 67 and surge to 16 under-par.

Earlier in the day, Scott Jamieson came within inches of scoring the first ever sub-60 round on the Tour to roar back into contention.

The Scot is one of four players behind Waring, the others being Simon Thornton (65), Jamie Donaldson (66) and Hennie Otto (69).

Pablo Larrazabal (64), Alvaro Quiros (68) and Chris Doak (69) are a further shot back on 13-under.
