Charl Schwartzel holds nerve to claim Valspar Championship success

Schwartzel claims Valspar Championship success

Charl Schwartzel has edged out Bill Haas in a playoff this evening to clinch the Valspar Championship title.

A closing-round score of four-under 67 dragged the South African right into contention, before seeing off Haas on the first extra hole to taste success.

Schwartzel had to overcome a two-shot deficit on his opponent with three holes left to play, but a Haas bogey on the 16th paved the way for the 31-year-old to draw level.

The playoff saw Schwartzel capitalise on the American's failure to save par on the 18th, meaning a third worldwide victory in his last six events.

Elsewhere, Ryan Moore finished two strokes further back on five under, while American compatriot Lee McCoy carded a four-under total to claim fourth place.
