Anirban Lahiri claims maiden European Tour title with Malaysian Open victory

Lahiri claims maiden European Tour title

Anirban Lahiri edged out Bernd Wiesberger to claim the Malaysian Open title in a dramatic finish at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.

An early birdie blitz from the Indian, including four on the first five holes, saw him card a four-under par 68 to finish one shot ahead of Wiesberger at 16 under.

Lahiri had to make up a five-shot deficit on his opponent heading into Sunday's final session, and he did exactly that thanks to a lack of birdies from the 29-year-old, who finished on 15 under overall as runner-up.

Alejandro Canizares was in with a strong chance of winning having come into round four hot on the heels of the leader alongside defending champion Lee Westwood, but he could only record a 74 to tie for third with Paul Waring.

Westwood struggled in the early stages and failed to truly recover as his three-over par 75 saw him finish down in fifth.

Lahiri, ranked number 73 in the world coming into this tournament, had never previously won an event on the European Tour.
