The Northern Irishman boasted a commanding four-stroke lead heading into the last day, having registered an impressive 66, 64 and 66 in his first three rounds.

Despite failing to scale the heights of recent days, the four-time major winner's round of 70 was enough to finish on 22-under par and stave off competition from Alex Noren.

McIlroy produced a steady, if not unspectacular, final round, holing three birdies in total, with a bogey at the seventh his only blemish to finish three shots clear of the Swede on 19 under.

Noren, who shot a seven-under 65 to put himself in contention, finished three strokes ahead of Scotland's Stephen Gallacher.

England's Andy Sullivan was among those in a five-way tie for fifth place, along with Martin Kaymer, Gary Stal, Bernd Wiesberger and Morten Orum Madsen.
