Day wins Players Champ by four strokes

Jason Day comfortably came through his final round to take home the Players Championship trophy at Sawgrass on Sunday.

The world number one had a four-stroke lead heading into the final day.

Day, whose halfway score of 129 was a tournament record, maintained his advantage by shooting birdies on three holes on the back nine after bogeying the sixth and ninth.

The Australian finished 15-under-par, while American Kevin Chappell ended his campaign second following a three-under-par 69 round.

Four players had to settle for tied third, while four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy finished seven-under-par, eight shots off the lead after carding four birdies and two bogeys on Sunday.

McIlroy's fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell ended the tournament eight-under-par, while Justin Rose was 10 shots off the top spot.
