Tiger Woods hopeful of October return

Tiger Woods says that he is hopeful of making a return to competitive golf next month after over a year on the sidelines.

Tiger Woods has said that he hopes to make his first competitive appearance in over a year at the Safeway Open in California on October 13.

After finishing in 10th place at the Wyndham Championship last summer, Woods announced that he would undergo surgery in a bid to cure a long-standing back problem, but despite hopes of being back in June, the former world number one was forced to put off a comeback.

However, the 40-year-old has now announced that he intends to play at the Safeway Open next month, with the Turkish Open and his own Hero World Challenge tournament pencilled in before the end of 2016.

The American said on his official website: "My rehabilitation is to the point where I'm comfortable making plans, but I still have work to do. Whether I can play depends on my continued progress and recovery. My hope is to have my game ready to go.

"I'm looking forward to going to California for my foundation event and Safeway. I'm also excited to return to Turkey and Albany. It could be a fun fall."

Woods has fallen to 711th in the world rankings after a year of inactivity.
