Adam Scott wins Golf Writers Association of America award

Masters champion Adam Scott has been named male player of the year by the Golf Writers Association of America.

The 33-year-old received 75 of the 218 votes cast, beating Tiger Woods, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour last season, by five ballots.

Scott became the first Australian to don the green jacket when he overcame Angel Cabrera in a playoff at Augusta back in April, before going on to win at The Barclays in August.

After winning the Australian PGA Championship and Masters titles in November, he narrowly missed out on the triple crown when Rory McIlroy sank a long birdie putt at 18 to clinch the Australian Open by one shot.

"It is an honour to be recognised as the most consistent male golfer of 2013 and it is appreciated to have the respect of the Golf Writers of America," Scott told reporters.

Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson were also in the running for the award.
