Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has insisted that he does not concentrate on the world rankings.
The 22-year-old could become the world number one later this week if he wins the WGC World Match Play and Luke Donald fails to get beyond round two.
Despite having the chance to be named the world's best, McIlroy has revealed that he is solely focused on playing well in Arizona.
"The rankings are sort of a by-product of what you do," said McIlroy. "I'd rather just concentrate on trying to win tournaments and trying to improve as a player.
"If I happen to do that, then hopefully the ranking will take care of itself."
McIlroy will take on South Africa's George Coetzee in the opening round on Wednesday.
