Ian Poulter backs his fellow Englishman Lee Westwood to one day end his wait for a Major title.

Ian Poulter has insisted that Lee Westwood "is too good a player not to" win a Major championship.

The 40-year-old was ahead of the field with 54 holes played at the weekend's Open Championship at Muirfield, but he eventually finished runner-up to American Phil Mickelson.

It is the 10th time in the last 16 Majors that Westwood has finished within the top 10, but Poulter believes that his fellow Englishman still has time to claim one of the sport's biggest prizes.

"I think Phil is a few years older than Lee is so guys can still win in their 40s," Poulter told Sky Sports News. "Lee has got plenty more years left. If he keeps putting himself in position he is going to be able to get his hands on one of them for sure. He is too good a player not to.

"Obviously the pressure is there so that every time he gets himself in position it is difficult because everyone wants him to win and he wants to win even more. There's a lot of pressure he puts on himself

"I am sure if he keeps working the way he is and keeps improving then I am sure it is going to come."

Like Westwood, Poulter has also never won a Major.
