Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy admits that his first round 'got away from him' after carding a 74 at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Rory McIlroy could not hide his disappointment after carding an opening-round 74 at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The world number two had played the opening 12 holes in three-under-par, but after dropping five shots on his final six holes, the Northern Irishman admitted that his round had 'got away from him'.

The 24-year-old told Sky Sports News: "For the first 12 holes, I played really, really well.

"I hit a lot of good shots, even on the way in, but it was just one of those rounds that got away from me."

McIlroy has yet to win on either the European or PGA Tour in 2013.
