Rory McIlroy has revealed how he broke down in an emotional phone call to his parents following his Masters collapse in April.

Rory McIlroy has admitted that he broke down in tears after his failure to win the Masters in April.

McIlroy hit an 80 in the final round at Augusta, to throw away a four-shot lead and went on to finish ten strokes behind eventual winner Charl Schwartzel.

Eight months after his collapse at Augusta, the world number two admits that he "let it all out" to his parents in an emotional phone call after the tournament.

The Northern Irishman claimed that his recovery, culminating in a US Open victory just 67 days after the Masters, begun after the phone call with his parents.

The 22-year-old revealed: "After that I was fine. You've got so many emotions and thoughts going through your head, but after a couple of weeks I realised that it's not going to be my only chance."

McIlroy went on to take the US Open title in record-breaking fashion, finishing eight shots ahead of his challengers at the Congressional Country Club.
