US Open champion Rory McIlroy has stormed to the top of the leaderboard alongside Thomas Bjorn after a rampant display on day two of the Dubai Desert Classic.

The 22-year-old finished the round at 13-under-par on a score of 65, while Danish pro Bjorn didn't take long to match the Northern Irishman with the clubhouse target.

"I just kept picking up birdies along the way and it puts me in a great position," McIlroy told Sky Sports News. "I feel a lot more confident than I did in Abu Dhabi ."

Round-one leader Rafael Cabrera-Bello dropped down to third with 12-under, while Martin Kaymer finished the session on 67, which included a hole in one on the seventh.

Meanwhile, former world number one Lee Westwood finished the day with a 10-under-par and second-round 65.
