Rory McIlroy backs potential anchoring ban

McIlroy backs anchoring ban

World number one Rory McIlroy has backed proposals to outlaw the anchoring of long-handled putters.

Under the terms of the new guidelines, which could be enforced by 2016, players would be banned from 'anchoring any strokes' from their chest or midriff.

Discussing the potential suspension on Twitter, McIlroy revealed that he was in agreement.

"Fully agree with the anchoring ban. Better image for the game of golf, skill and nerves are all part of the game. Level playing field in '16," he wrote.

A three-month consultation period will take place soon where players and manufacturers will be able to give their opinion on the subject.
