Padraig Harrington hits 64 in New York

Harrington leads Barclays Tournament

Padraig Harrington has improved his chances of earning a spot in the Ryder Cup team after a round of 64 on the opening day of the Barclays Tournament.

The Irishman impressed in New York with a seven-under-par round to lead the competition by one shot ahead of Nick Watney and Brian Harman.

Harrington will need to be selected as one of Jose Maria Olazabal's wildcard picks if he is to compete for Europe at Medinah Country Club next month.

Luke Donald and Tiger Woods both opened up with rounds of 68, with Rory McIlroy a shot further back.

Sergio Garcia is five-under following his victory at the Wyndham Championship earlier this week and Justin Rose is also in contention after a round of 67.
