GB&I take Walker Cup lead

Great Britain & Ireland claimed a 7-5 lead over the USA after the first day of the Walker Cup in Aberdeen.

Northern Ireland's Paul Cutler was the most consistent performer at the amateur tournament, winning both his single and foursome matches.

Other standout victories came in the form of Rhys Pugh's comeback against Patrick Rodgers, and James Byrne's win over Nathan Smith.

America's two triumphs came from Harris English's turnaround against Andy Sullivan, and Patrick Cantlay's defeat of Michael Stewart.

The hosts also won three out of the four foursome contests going into the final session on Sunday.
