Defending champion Poulter out of World Matchplay

Defending Volvo World Matchplay champion Ian Poulter has been knocked out at the last-16 stage of this year's tournament by Alvaro Quiros.

The 36-year-old never really got going against the big-hitting Spaniard and was defeated 4&3 at the Finca Cortesin course in Malaga.

Poulter was one of five Englishmen to be eliminated on Saturday morning.

Justin Rose was unable to continue his good form from the opening rounds, losing out to Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, who produced a round full of birdies and eagles.

Tom Lewis, Robert Rock and Richard Finch were also denied places in the quarter-finals.

The quarter-finals take place this afternoon.
