Domenicali hints even full race distances may be cut

After pushing for more sprint races and even reverse grids, it emerges that Stefano Domenicali has even admitted Formula 1 could also shorten its grands prix.

Speaking to selected media before the Italian GP at Monza, the F1 CEO said the sport must adapt to younger fans who are less inclined to watch full-length races.

"Some of the world's best sports have been inspired by our work, so it's time for us to take things a step further," Domenicali said, pointing to changes since Liberty Media’s takeover in 2017.

He conceded many supporters remain attached to tradition, but argued viewing figures show highlight reels are often more popular than full race broadcasts.

"There's also the issue of the length of the competitions," the former Ferrari team boss explained. "We believe they're too long for young people. Perhaps for us, who were born with this format, it's fine this way, but there's a large segment of the audience that only wants to see the highlights.

"Today, everything is going very well, but precisely for that reason, we shouldn't rest on our laurels, but rather think about what the next step will be."

According to Domenicali, the aim is to ensure F1 stays relevant as habits change. "We see that younger fans are only interested in the exciting moments of the weekend," he said.
