Jenson Button says that it would take something special for him to cut down Fernando Alonso's lead at the top of the Formula 1 drivers championship.

Jenson Button has vowed to fight Fernando Alonso all the way for the Formula 1 drivers championship.

The Spaniard finds himself with a 34-point lead over Mark Webber at the top following Sunday's victory in the German Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, Button finds himself in seventh - 86 points behind the Ferrari man - and admits that it would take a major overhaul to challenge the two-time champion.

"We might have to repeat 2009 in reverse, win six out of seven races in the second half of the season," said Button. "That might have to be the case to challenge Fernando but it can happen. Look how he as picked up so many points but that can soon turn around.

"You never know. If you start putting yourself in a position that Fernando does not expect, even if he has a big margin, it still hurts to see another guy so strong.

"Anything is possible. It is never easy when we are this far behind but I am never going to give up, I am going to fight all the way."

Button won the world championship in 2009 while driving for Brawn.
