Udinese need extra time to see off 10-man Cesena

Udinese reach the last 16 of the Coppa Italia with a 4-2 win over Cesena after extra time.

Udinese needed extra time to secure safe passage to the last 16 of the Coppa Italia, defeating Cesena 4-2 following a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes.

The home side were slow out of the starting blocks and they were left stunned when Milan Djuric gave the visitors the lead with just four minutes on the clock.

Udinese upped their game after falling behind, and they found themselves on level terms in the 22nd minute as Allan Marques Loureiro cancelled out Djuric's opener.

It looked like the teams were due to head into the break all square, but Bruno Fernandes handed Udinese the lead one minute before the interval.

Their advantage didn't last long as Davide Succi found the net to square the match 10 minutes into the second half, before Cesena lost Massimo Volta to a straight red card.

Andrea Stramaccioni's side needed extra time to see off the 10 men of Cesena and they landed the next blow in the 100th minute, Lucas Evangelista putting them in good stead for the next round.

The hosts put their progression beyond doubt with six minutes remaining as Cyril Thereau added a fourth to dump more woe on Cesena.

Udinese will take on Napoli in the next phase of the competition when it resumes in January.
