Sutton vs Boreham Wood - prediction, team news, lineups

Sutton United play host to Boreham Wood on Wednesday night in need of kick-starting their National League campaign.

At a time when the home side sit in 18th position in the table, the visitors to Gander Green Lane are three points further up the standings in 11th spot.

Match preview

Having only finished in 12th position in their first season back in the National League, Sutton are motivated to put together a promotion push this time around.

However, Steve Morison has witnessed his team earn just five points from their opening six matches, starting the campaign with no wins in five.

Prior to the most recent encounter against Carlisle United, defeats have been suffered against Forest Green Rovers, Scunthorpe United and Rochdale.

That heaped the pressure on Sutton as they welcomed unbeaten Carlisle to Green Gander Lane, but they responded with a morale-boosting 2-1 triumph.

Edon Pruti and David Ogbonna both got on the scoresheet to move Sutton one point clear of the relegation zone, even though they remain with the joint second-worst defensive record in the division.

Meanwhile, Boreham Wood have quickly settled back into lift in the fifth tier on the back of earning promotion through the National League playoffs in 2024-25.

Since beginning the season with a 2-0 defeat to Rochdale, eight points have been collected from their following four fixtures.

Back-to-back 2-1 victories were posted against Braintree Town and Truro City, clubs that currently sit in 14th and 22nd place in the table.

Luke Garrard's side have secured share of the spoils in their two away games thus far, earning points at Carlisle and Hartlepool United respectively.

Team News

Ogbonna will be expecting a recall to the Sutton XI on the back of scoring the decisive goal against Carlisle.

Brandon Njoku is the obvious candidate to drop down to the substitutes' bench and allow Ogbonna to feature at left-wing.

Lewis Simper may also return in central midfield, taking the place of Mo Dabre having been dropped for the previous fixture.

Barring any fitness issues, Garrard may be prepared to stick with the Boreham Wood side that battled their way to a point at Hartlepool.

Zak Brunt, a recent loan addition from Barnet, is an option to start in the final third ahead of Matt Rush.

Sutton United possible starting lineup:

Sims; Taylor, Phipps, Eccleston; Wadham, Boutin, Simper, Pruti; Harris, Nadsean, Ogbonna

Boreham Wood possible starting lineup:

Ashmore; King, Reynolds, Bush, Ilesanmi; O'Connell, White; Brunt, Adbulmalik, Sousa; Norris

We say: Sutton United 1-1 Boreham Wood

With Boreham Wood having put together a lengthy unbeaten run at the start of the campaign, they deserve to be viewed as marginal favourites for this game. That said, Sutton have momentum after the victory over Carlisle, leading us to predict a hard-fought draw.
