Roberto De Zerbi rules out £60m midfielder exit
Tottenham transfer news today: What's happening on August 23?
The Pape Matar Sarr situation became significantly more dramatic on August 22 when it emerged that Tottenham had formally informed the 23-year-old Senegal international that he is free to leave, a message that did not land well: Sarr responded by deleting all of his Spurs-related posts from social media.
Galatasaray are the most advanced club in pursuit of Sarr, who is believed to have agreed personal terms with the Turkish giants, although Tottenham's asking price of just over £20m is yet to be satisfied.
However, De Zerbi outlined his intentions over another young midfielder, telling his pre-Brentford press conference: "Lucas Bergvall, 100%, he is staying," describing the 20-year-old as a player of top potential who has confirmed his desire to remain.
Bergvall was blocked from leaving by Spurs' £60m valuation throughout the summer despite having submitted a transfer request, with Newcastle's £46m bid rejected and interest from Sunderland and Nottingham Forest also failing to produce an acceptable offer.
The Swede was taken off at half time against Brentford alongside Conor Gallagher, although De Zerbi refused to outright criticise him, while admitting he knew Bergvall might "suffer".
In brighter news, Spurs reached an agreement worth approximately £85m for Manchester City's Savinho on August 21, a deal that would push their summer spending toward £377m if also combined with Omar Marmoush's rumoured arrival.
De Zerbi is also monitoring Illia Zabarnyi of Paris Saint-Germain as a Cristian Romero replacement, and the Lilywhites evidently need even more defensive reinforcements if Saturday's showing is anything to go by.
