Werder Bremen coy on Steffen Freund link

Thomas Eichen refuses to name candidates in the running to become next manager of Werder Bremen.

Werder Bremen general manager Thomas Eichin has remained quiet on the subject of who will be replacing Thomas Schaaf at the Weserstadion.

The 52-year-old stepped down from his position by mutual consent earlier this month after 14 years in charge of Die Grun-Weissen.

Eichen revealed that the club have already identified their ideal candidate to succeed Schaaf, but said that there is still work to do in convincing him to take the job.

"I can confirm we have an ideal candidate for the vacancy," Eichen told Kreiszeitung Syke.

"We now have the obligation to convince our target to be the right man to take over the job at our club. We have already been in touch and talks have begun.

"Our plan is to confirm the arrival in those next two to four weeks."

Reports have suggested that Tottenham Hotspur assistant coach Steffen Freund is the man at the top of Bremen's list, but Eichen refused to be drawn on speculation.

"I am not going to make comments on any of the names mentioned," he added. "I do not intend to discuss this."

Former German international Mehmet Scholl and former FC Basel boss Heiko Vogel are also believed to be in the running for the vacant post.
