Spain controlled possession throughout the game, but it was England who began the match brightest, as Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley both missed the target from outside the penalty area early on.

The hosts soon took control of proceedings, with Gerard Pique, Paco Alcacer and Sergio Busquets all missing the target, before Diego Costa collected a pass from Chelsea teammate Cesc Fabregas, only to fire wide.

England improved before the break as Harry Kane and Fabian Delph tested Spain keeper Iker Casillas with tame efforts, while Ryan Bertrand picked out the former in a good position on the stroke of half time, only for the Tottenham Hotspur man to drag his effort wide.

Both sides looked tentative after the break, with neither side able to create an opportunity until 65 minutes when Alcacer spurned a chance to take the lead from inside the penalty area.

Spain netted the opener on 72 minutes through Gaspar, who picked up a through-ball from Fabregas before volleying beyond the reach of England keeper Joe Hart.

The visitors came close to an equaliser moments later when debutant Eric Dier found Kane, but the striker's effort went well wide of the goal.

Vicente del Bosque's side added a second goal on 84 minutes, as a Hart clearance was collected high up the pitch by Spain, before Nolito found Arsenal midfielder Cazorla who placed a finish beyond the Manchester City keeper.

England almost pulled a goal back before the final whistle when Kyle Walker set up substitute Wayne Rooney, but the captain's volley struck the crossbar, while Kane tested Casillas moments later.
