Preview: Ross County vs. Dundee United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Scottish Premiership clash between Ross County and Dundee United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Dundee United are certain of a Europa League qualification spot as they currently sit fifth in the Scottish Premiership, four points clear of Saturday's hosts Ross County.

The home side have not won a match since the Scottish league was split into the Championship group and Relegation group, but will be hoping to end on a positive note on the final day of the season this weekend.

Malky Mackay's side have only netted one goal in their last four matches, coming from Jordan White against Rangers last time out, but that did not stop Ross County from suffering a 4-1 defeat.

The Staggies failed to get a foothold in that encounter at Ibrox, where the hosts dominated possession and limited the visitors to just one shot on target.

County have scored more than the two teams above them in the Championship group of the Scottish Premiership, but they have conceded 59 goals in 37 matches, which is perhaps their biggest concern.

Saturday's home team may fancy their chances at securing their ninth clean sheet of the campaign, though, as Dundee United have only found the back of the net on 35 occasions this season.

The Terrors have the opportunity to leapfrog Motherwell on the final day this weekend, currently sitting just one point behind fourth place with an arguably more favourable outing based on form and the fact that Celtic, who host Motherwell, have been crowned champions.

Celtic won the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday evening, when they travelled to Tannadice Park where Dundee United almost halted the champions' party after Dylan Levitt equalised in the 72nd minute.

Tam Courts's side could not prevent the Hoops from winning the title on their ground as the game ended all square, but it was a positive point for United after defeat against Rangers last weekend.

Dundee United have not been as effective away from home compared to their points tally collected on their own patch, netting seven fewer goals on their travels, suggesting that they may struggle in the attacking third this weekend.

The Terrors earned two victories against Ross County at Tannadice Park earlier in the season, but the last match between these two to be played at the Global Energy Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw in November.

Team News

Ross County goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer, who has been on loan from Charlton, will not feature on the final day due to injury, meaning that Ross Laidlaw will continue between the posts.

The home side will operate in a 4-2-3-1 formation, which is expected to be led by White, who was replaced by Dominic Samuel against Rangers on Wednesday evening.

Jack Burroughs also came into the side in place of Regan Charles-Cook on the left wing, but Ross Callachan is almost certain to be starting in the number 10 role.

Dundee United's injury list is much longer, including Calum Butcher, Ian Harkes, Marc McNulty, Maxime Biamou and Peter Pawlett and there are likely to be some changes from their last outing.

Adrian Sporle could return to the starting 11 in the left wing-back role, in place of Ilmari Niskanen, while Kieran Freeman could continue on the opposite wing.

Tony Watt is likely to end the campaign as Dundee United's top goalscorer, and he is likely to partner Nicky Clark as a strike duo leading the line for the visitors.

Ross County possible starting lineup:
Laidlaw; Vokins, Iacovitti, Baldwin, Watson; Tilson, Cancola; Burroughs, Callachan, Spittal; White

Dundee United possible starting lineup:
Siegrist; McMann, Edwards, Smith; Sporle, Levitt, McDonald, Meekison, Freeman; Watt, Clark

We say: Ross County 1-1 Dundee United

With little to play for on the final day for both of these sides, as United are already certain of a Europa League qualification spot, this encounter could be a slow affair.

The visitors have not scored many goals this season compared to the teams around them in the table, while Ross County will be looking to avoid defeat in front of their home crowd on the final day.
