Francesco Lodi's penalty secured a 1-0 victory for Catania in their tie with Fiorentina on Sunday.

Catania have moved into eighth in Serie A with a 1-0 victory over Fiorentina on Sunday.

It was the home side who started the stronger and Giovanni Marchese came close to breaking the deadlock after four minutes, but his effort just missed the target.

Fiorentina were not without their chances, however, and Alessio Cerci brought the best out of Juan Pablo Carrizo after 13 minutes.

Andrea Lazzari was next to go close for the away side after 24 minutes, but his effort was once again pushed away by Carrizo in the Catania goal.

Catania took the lead just before the hour mark when Alessandro Gamberini felled Gonzalo Bergessio in the box and Francesco Lodi stepped up dispatch the penalty.

The away side came close to levelling the match with an effort from Riccardo Montolivo after 66 minutes, but his strike missed the post.

Fiorentina passed up the best chance of the second period after 75 minutes when Cesare Natali found himself in the area, but his header missed the target from close range as Catania held on for the victory.
