Champions League holders Real Madrid win the 2022 UEFA Super Cup courtesy of a 2-0 victory over German side Eintracht Frankfurt.

David Alaba and Karim Benzema scored the goals as Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night.

Los Blancos were present in the one-off fixture due to their Champions League triumph last term, with Carlo Ancelotti's side recording a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the final.

Meanwhile, Frankfurt beat Rangers on penalties in the Europa League final to secure their spot in the showpiece event for the first time in their history.

Real Madrid were playing in the fixture for the eighth time, and they have now lifted the trophy on five occasions, following on from their successes in 2002, 2014, 2016 and 2017, with Alaba and Benzema both on the scoresheet in Helsinki.

Despite adding Antonio Rudiger and Aurelien Tchouameni to their squad over the summer, Los Blancos had the same starting side from the Champions League final, with Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde joining Benzema in the final third of the field.

Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric lined up in midfield, while it was Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy in the full-back positions, with Eder Militao and Alaba playing ahead of Thibaut Courtois.

Real Madrid's goalkeeper put in a star performance in the Champions League final, and he needed to make a smart save in the 14th minute of this contest, denying Daichi Kamada after an impressive move from the German side.

Three minutes later, Vinicius had one cleared off the line by Tuta down the other end, with both sides having their moments in an open start to the contest.

Courtois then had to deny Ansgar Knauff in the 24th minute before Vinicius just missed the post in the 37th minute after smart build-up play involving Benzema.

Real Madrid did make the breakthrough shortly after, though, with Alaba converting from close range after Casemiro had picked out his teammate with a header.

The Spanish and European champions should have doubled their advantage just before the interval through Benzema, but the striker's right-footed effort just missed the post.

Real Madrid also had the first serious chance of the second period in the 55th minute, but Vinicius, who continued to cause problems, saw his effort said by Kevin Trapp.

Just past the hour, Casemiro hit the top of the crossbar with a left-footed strike before Courtois kept out an effort from Knauff down the other end.

The game's second goal arrived shortly after, though, with Benzema finding the back of the net after a cross from Vinicius, but it was a mistake from Trapp, who allowed the ball to pass him far too easily.

Benzema is now Real Madrid's second-highest goalscorer of all time with 324, passing Raul, with only Cristiano Ronaldo (450) ahead of him in terms of strikes for the famous club.

From the moment that the second goal went in, it was game over for Frankfurt, who found it difficult to get going against Ancelotti's side for much of the contest, with the difference in quality between the two sides on display for most of the 90 minutes.

Real Madrid might have had a third in the 81st minute when Benzema found Kroos, but the German's strike from distance flew wide of the post.

Tchouameni and Rudiger were both introduced for their competitive debuts in the 85th minute, following Rodrygo, Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Ceballos onto the field.

There was not too much to report in the final exchanges, though, with Ancelotti's side closing out the contest to ensure that they would secure yet more silverware.

Real Madrid will begin their 2022-23 La Liga campaign away to Almeria on Sunday, while Frankfurt, who lost 6-1 to Bayern Munich in their Bundesliga opener last Friday, will resume their league season away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday.
