Cristiano Ronaldo nets four as Real Madrid hit sorry Malmo for eight

Cristiano Ronaldo sets a new record for Champions League group goals as Real Madrid put eight past Malmo.

Cristiano Ronaldo found the net four times as Real Madrid put eight past Malmo without reply in the final group match of their Champions League campaign this evening.

The prolific forward's scoring feat saw him set a new record of 11 strikes for the group stage of the competition, and helped his side consolidate the top spot in Group A.

It took the hosts 12 minutes to open the scoring, Karim Benzema on hand to guide the ball over the line after Isco's header from Ronaldo's cross was blocked on the line.

The French international netted his second in the 24th minute, beating Malmo goalkeeper Johan Wiland with a looping header following another Ronaldo cross.

After playing a part in Real's first two goals, the Portuguese international got his name on the scoresheet before half time when his free kick eluded Wiland and crept into the bottom corner.

Ronaldo ran riot in the second half, making it four within two minutes of the restart when he tapped home the rebound from close range after Isco's initial strike was parried.

The former Manchester United star completed his hat-trick in the 50th minute as he danced past two defenders and slid the ball beyond Wiland to make it 5-0 to Real.

However, Ronaldo was not yet done. He netted his record-toppling fourth just before the hour mark, turning in an Isco cross from close range.

Mateo Kovacic added goal number seven in the 70th minute when he swept home Jese's cross from inside the box, but there was still time for Benzema to complete his hat-trick.

Malmo allowed the France international too much space inside the box, giving him the chance to drive a low shot into the bottom corner to cap off his treble and dump more misery on the Swedes.

The defeat sees Malmo's European adventure come to an end as they finish their Champions League campaign at the bottom of Group A on goal difference.
