Sports Mole's Team of the Week

Sports Mole's Team of the Week

It has been a dramatic weekend in the penultimate round of fixtures in the Premier League, with movement at the top and bottom of the Premier League table.

Manchester City have moved closer to the title with victory over Newcastle, while Arsenal's and Tottenham's Champions League hopes have suffered as they both dropped two points.

The battle at the bottom also remains fascinating, with Queens Park Rangers moving clear, while Bolton Wanderers sacrificed a two-goal lead against West Bromwich Albion and must now beat Stoke City next weekend to have a realistic chance of survival.

Here, Sports Mole picks out its best XI.

David de Gea – Manchester United The Manchester United stopper did not have much to do in his team's 2-0 win over Swansea City, but he was calm and composed when called upon. The Spaniard has improved no end since his early season stumble, and is emerging as one of the best stoppers in the league.

Kyle Walker - Tottenham Hotspur The England international has been simply stunning this season, and proved that once more in Spurs' draw with Aston Villa on Sunday. He is a real threat going forward, while his defensive work has improved since the early stages of the season. Vincent Kompany - Manchester City We really are running out of superlatives for the Belgian international. He has been in sensational form all season, and he was a rock at the heart of City's defence during their win over Newcastle United. Rio Ferdinand - Manchester United The 33-year-old remains one of the finest defenders in the league, and was the essence of calm in Manchester United's 2-0 win over Swansea City. Pablo Zabaleta - Manchester City Not always a first pick for Roberto Mancini this season, but his performances in recent weeks have cemented his spot in the side. He was fantastic against Manchester United on Monday, and continued that standard against Newcastle. His defensive work is superb, while his engine and ability to attack make him the modern day defender.

Clint Dempsey - Fulham The American international struck Premier League goal number 17 in the Cottagers' win over Sunderland, continuing his fine season. Not only is the 29-year-old a real threat in the air, his ability on the ground is up there with the best. Marouane Fellaini - Everton The Belgian was known more for his swinging elbows than ability in his early Everton career, but not any more. The powerful midfield man is a real force, and is quickly emerging into one of the best of his kind in the league. Moussa Dembele - Fulham Quite probably one of the most underrated players in the Premier League, and he got on the scoresheet this weekend. The 24-year-old has a wonderful ability on the ball and plays the game at his own pace – such a rare trait. Yaya Toure - Manchester City The Ivorian scored a double in City's win over Newcastle, which has all but secured them the Premier League title. The former Barcelona man was a real threat all game, combining defensive work with his aggressive powerful running.

Djibril Cisse - Queens Park Rangers The Frenchman admitted that he was unhappy at being left out of the starting XI for his side's match with Stoke City, but he grabbed the winner in the final minute which could keep the R's in the Premier League. Robin Van Persie - Arsenal Where would Arsenal be without his goals? The Dutchman struck another double against Norwich City this weekend, carrying his side through the match.
