Kara Adenegan wins BBC’s Young Sports Personality prize

Para-athlete Kare Adenegan has been crowned BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.

The 17-year-old was presented with her award at the Radio 1 Teen Awards at the SSE Arena, Wembley.

This year Adenegan became T34 100 metres WPA European champion, winning her first gold medal in senior competition, and taking silver in the T34 800m.

She also set a new T34 100m world record at the London Anniversary Games – where she became the first female T34 athlete to complete the race in under 17 seconds – and beat long-time rival Hannah Cockroft for the first time in a championship race at the Diamond League in July.

Adenegan, who came out on top from a shortlist of 10 which included Fulham footballer Ryan Sessegnon, will attend the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event in December in Birmingham.

The BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year is awarded to an outstanding young sportsperson aged 17 or under on January 1, 2018 and was selected by a panel from nominations made by sports governing bodies via the Youth Sport Trust.
