FIFA is reportedly planning to revamp the Club World Cup and expand the tournament to include 24 teams.
Clubs from every continent would take part in the summer competition once every four years, according to BBC Sport.
FIFA's proposals involve splitting the participating teams into eight groups of three before the quarter-finals commence.
Finalists would play five fixtures, but it is unclear whether Europe's top clubs will back the plans as many have already expressed concerns about fixture congestion.
Nevertheless, the report states that FIFA has held "promising talks" with confederations, associations and clubs about the proposals.
The governing body is also said to be plotting a revamped Nations League and will hold a meeting about both competitions next month.
