PFA chief Gordon Taylor calls the FA's wage offer to England's top female footballers "embarrassing".

Gordon Taylor has criticised the FA over its pay offer to England's top female professional footballers.

The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) chief branded the governing body's offer to pay England Ladies players £18,000 per year "embarrassing".

Hope Powell's squad have opted not to sign new contracts on the advice of the PFA and are holding out for better deals.

"I am surprised the FA have not been more responsive to the girls' reasonable demands," Taylor said.

"They are offering to move these central contracts up from £16,000, which has been the figure since 2009, to £18,000. Come on. That figure is embarrassing."

Women's football has received increased publicity since the Olympic Games, where Team GB reached the quarter-finals after qualifying from the group phase with a 100% record.

England Ladies defender Sophie Bradley told BBC Sport: "I think it's now got to the point where we need to be rewarded because of the amount of people who are interested in watching us play and the progression of the game."

Top male football stars currently earn more in a day than their female counterparts do in a year.
