Carver 'offered Newcastle resignation'

John Carver has reportedly offered to resign as Newcastle United's head coach after a poor run of results which has left the club hovering above the relegation zone.

According to the Daily Mail, Carver told the club managing director Lee Charnley that he would fall on his sword, although it appears that United were unable to find a suitable replacement.

It is thought that Newcastle offered the role to Derby County boss Steve McClaren for the final three games of the season, but the ex-England manager turned it down.

Meanwhile, members of the Magpies playing squad held a meeting at the club's training ground, as they try to arrest a run of eight consecutive defeats.

However, it is reported that none of United's coaching staff were allowed to attend that meeting.
