Millwall edge out Barnsley

Millwall edge past Barnsley with a 1-0 win in the Championship thanks to an own-goal from Scott Wiseman.

Millwall have grabbed a slender 1-0 win over Barnsley in the Championship as Scott Wiseman put through his own net to give the home side victory.

Martyn Waghorn could have put the hosts ahead in the eighth minute with a right-footed shot from outside the box, but his effort flew just wide of the right post.

Waghorn was wasteful yet again in an opening 20 minutes that saw very little goalmouth action, this time as the Millwall man let fly with his left only to see the ball go wide.

Millwall continued to dominate possession and went close through Guy Moussi, who saw his effort blocked from close range, before Waghorn was again denied by the Barnsley keeper.

It took until the start of the second half for Barnsley to create a meaningful chance and it fell to Jacob Mellis, whose header was blocked in front of goal.

Despite the run of play, Marcus Pedersen almost turned the game on its head for Barnsley, but his right-footed shot was met by a great save to prevent the visitors from going in front.

Steve Morison then missed a guilt-edged chance for Millwall as he headed wide from the centre of the box when it was probably easier to score.

However, Millwall grabbed their winner in the 77th minute as Wiseman put the ball into his own net to wrap up a miserable afternoon for the travelling fans.
