Everton expect Manchester United to return with an improved offer for Leighton Baines this week, but remain determined to extend the left-back's contract regardless.

Everton are reportedly braced for an improved bid from Manchester United for defender Leighton Baines this week.

United registered an offer of around £12m for the England international last month, which was swiftly rejected by the Toffees.

New Everton boss Roberto Martinez has held initial talks with Baines over a new contract, with further discussions over an extension expected this week.

Martinez values the left-back at around £20m and will rebuff any offer from United that falls below that mark, according to The Guardian.

The 28-year-old has spent six seasons on Merseyside, clocking up 246 appearances for Everton in all competitions.
