Community Shield: United vs. Wigan

David Moyes has an opportunity to win silverware in his first competitive game as Manchester United boss when the Red Devils take on Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

The annual pre-season curtain raiser has a slight twist to it this year - it is not pre-season for FA Cup winners Wigan, who have already begun their league campaign following relegation to the second tier.

The Latics beat Barnsley 4-0 in their Championship opener and manager Owen Coyle could name the same side that began Wigan's quest for an immediate return to the Premier League so impressively.

However, the Irishman may be tempted to hand a debut to new signing James McClean, who arrived from Sunderland in a reported £2m deal this week.

Moyes has given an indication of his potential team selection by omitting several big names from the starting lineup for Rio Ferdinand's testimonial match against Sevilla this evening.

One of those is Wayne Rooney, but the wantaway England striker is also likely to miss out at Wembley, with doubts over his fitness and his long-term future with United.

However, captain Nemanja Vidic, Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick should all feature from the off, as should full-backs Rafael da Silva and Patrice Evra.

Nani, Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck are competing for starting spots on the flanks, with Jonny Evans likely to partner Vidic at centre-back. Phil Jones could operate in midfield alongside Carrick.

Possible lineups

United: De Gea; Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra; Nani, Jones, Carrick, Young; Kagawa; Van Persie

Wigan: Carson; Perch, Barnett, Boyce, Crainey; McClean, Watson, McCarthy, Beausejour; Maloney; Holt

Sports Mole says: 3-0
