Mourinho holds talks over new contract?

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly held "extensive talks" with the club over a contract extension amid speculation over his future.

The 54-year-old has 18 months remaining on the three-year deal he penned to replace Louis van Gaal in summer 2016, although the club do have an option to extend his contract by a further year should they wish to.

A report late last night claimed that senior figures at Old Trafford have grown concerned that Mourinho could decide to quit at the end of this season but according to The Telegraph, both parties have been in negotiations for the last month over a long-term arrangement.

The newspaper claims that talks "accelerated" in December and the former Chelsea boss has an "eagerness" to remain with United for the long haul, despite his apparent criticism of the transfer budget made available to him.

Mourinho won two pieces of silverware in his debut season with United - the Europa League and the EFL Cup - but finds himself out of the latter competition and 15 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City in the current campaign.
