Wayne Rooney to miss Manchester United's clash against Arsenal

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will play no part in Sunday's clash against Arsenal, manager Louis van Gaal confirms.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that captain Wayne Rooney will play no part in Sunday's clash against Arsenal due to injury.

The England skipper limped off the field with a dead leg during United's 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend.

Van Gaal initially suggested that Rooney would be fit for their contest against the Gunners at Old Trafford, but it has been confirmed this afternoon that the forward has not recovered in time to play.

Left-back Luke Shaw has also been ruled out after he suffered a blow to the head during last weekend's match against Palace at Selhurst Park.

"The situation is not positive for us, they cannot play, neither of them," Van Gaal told MUTV. "Yes it is a short-term thing, we have only one match to play, so I think it will be difficult for them to play again this season."

Meanwhile, Angel di Maria and Robin van Persie have been declared fit to play.
