Manchester City bow out of Europe

Julian Schieber's goal in the second half sees Borussia Dortmund defeat Manchester City 1-0 in Germany and knock the Premier League champions out of Europe.

Manchester City have been knocked out of Europe as they lost 1-0 away to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this evening.

The defeat means that Roberto Mancini's side finish at the bottom of Group D and fail to qualify for the Europa League.

It was a slow start at Signal-Iduna-Park, as both sides took some time to get into the rhythm.

The match sprang into life in the 11th minute when Dortmund created the first meaningful chance of the game.

Oliver Kirch found himself with the ball just outside the City penalty area and took an attempt on goal, but it was palmed over the crossbar by Joe Hart.

City conceived a good attacking move in the 18th minute with Carlos Tevez playing Samir Nasri through, but Marcel Schmelzer dispossessed the Frenchman.

Six minutes later Nasri tried to send Edin Dzeko through from the left after an intricate passing move, but Schmelzer made an important interception to clear the ball away for a corner.

Minutes later Julian Schieber failed to head home Ivan Perisic's cross from the left.

Then in the 34th minute Dzeko forced Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller into making a good save, and moments later Marco Reus's drive shaved the outside of the City post.

Dzeko could have put City into the lead in the 47th minute had he been able to head Nasri's cross past Weidenfeller.

Then Hart was forced into making two quick saves, first from Perisic and then from Kevin Grosskreutz.

Dortmund's pressure in the second half eventually paid off in the 57th minute when they took the lead.

Jakub Blaszczykowski put in a low cross that Schieber tapped in from just yards out.

The German champions almost made it 2-0 just moments later when Schieber was sent through on goal, but the forward was foiled by an onrushing Hart.

Midway through the second half Tevez wriggled past three Dortmund defender before shooting on goal, but Weidenfeller parried it for a corner.

Robert Lewandowski came close for Dortmund in the 82nd minute when he shot at the City goal from an acute angle, but Hart made another good save.
