Granit Xhaka will not be linking up with Switzerland's Olympic squad and will instead concentrate of preparing for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign with his new club Borussia Monchengladbach.

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka has been withdrawn Switzerland's squad for the Olympics.

The 19-year-old, who joined the Bundesliga outfit from FC Basel in May, will instead link up with his new teammates ahead of the new season.

Xhaka was selected to take part in the Games but has now been withdrawn following negotiations between the Swiss FA and Monchengladbach's director of sport Max Eberl.

"They were hard but fair negotiations," said Eberl. "We are pleased Granit will be staying here in Monchengladbach.

"For Borussia, but also for Granit personally, this is a pleasing and important decision."

Xhaka was a standout performer suring Basel's run to the last 16 of the Champions League.
