Liverpool table 'improved' contract offer to defender amid Real Madrid transfer link

Liverpool table 'improved' contract offer to first-team star

Liverpool have reportedly tabled an important offer to keep Ibrahima Konate at the club.

The Reds lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid for a paltry fee, and the Premier League champions will not want to repeat the same mistake again.

Konate has entered the final year of his five-year deal, and he is reportedly being targeted by Real Madrid

According to a report from Foot Mercato, the Reds have tabled a new and improved offer to Konate, as they are eager not to let his contract expire.

The French defender has reportedly turned down Liverpool's contract extension offers in recent months, but the Reds are not looking to sell him in the summer window.

Liverpool not looking to sell Konate

The 26-year-old forged a strong partnership at the back last season with Virgil van Dijk and played a pivotal role in helping Liverpool win their 20th Premier League title.

Konate made 31 appearances in the Premier League and scored one goal. The Frenchman also found the net in the Champions League group game against AC Milan.

Liverpool rate him highly, and according to Fabrizio Romano, the club hope to strike a deal with Konate. However, the situation may change if the Frenchman still refuse to sign a new deal at Anfield.

Liverpool need another defender this summer

This has been a massive transfer window for Liverpool with seven players already arriving at Merseyside for a combined outlay of £300m.

The Reds have signed a right-back and a left-back, but they also need to sign a new centre-back after Jarell Quansah left the club to join Bayer Leverkusen.

Joe Gomez is likely to leave as well, which means a new centre-back is a priority.

Liverpool have been reportedly linked with a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, and it remains to be seen if they can reach an agreement to secure his move before the end of the window.
