Report: Steven Gerrard offered coaching role in Liverpool academy

A report claims that Jurgen Klopp is happy to give Steven Gerrard a chance to climb the coaching ladder at Liverpool, starting at the bottom with the club's academy.

Jurgen Klopp will reportedly offer Steven Gerrard the chance to start his post-playing career with Liverpool as part of the club's academy coaching setup.

The 36-year-old is currently mulling over his next move after hanging up his boots and was told by Klopp that "the door is always open" for an Anfield return.

Gerrard has already turned down a dual player-manager role with League One MK Dons, while also being offered other coaching positions at Premier League and Championship level, but The Telegraph claims that he is holding out for the job he craves - a part of Liverpool's youth-team project, where his own rise to stardom started off.

It is suggested that the Reds' longest-serving skipper will hold talks with Klopp over the coming days, where it is hoped that an agreement can be struck to keep the ex-England international on board at Melwood.

Should he take on a role with the academy, though, it will likely be under the guidance of director Alex Inglethorpe and mentor Steve Heighway, both of whom Klopp is said to be keen to keep on board.
