A late own goal has given Liverpool a 1-0 win at Hearts in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier at Tynecastle.

The hosts were gifted an early chance when Jamie Carragher's weak backpass was nearly intercepted by John Sutton, but Pepe Reina was quick off his line to clear.

Liverpool had their first opportunity soon after as Charlie Adam's long-range effort was saved by Jamie MacDonald.

Following chances for Sutton and Raheem Sterling, Fabio Borini should have given the visitors the lead, but the Italian failed to connect with Jordan Henderson's cross.

Hearts were appealing for a penalty towards the end of the opening half as Carragher looked to have handled. However, the referee waved away the protests.

Brendan Rodgers's side were happy to have the majority of possession after the break but had to wait until 57 minutes to have their first proper chance of the half as Adam again fired wide.

The Scottish midfielder had a similar opportunity minutes later, only to see this one gathered easily by MacDonald.

Liverpool finally made the breakthrough on 81 minutes when Andy Webster put the ball into his own net.
