Leicester scrape past Brighton on penalty shootout

Leicester City booked their spot in the final eight of the EFL Cup with a victory over Brighton & Hove Albion after a penalty shootout on Wednesday.

Harvey Barnes gave the Foxes a lead after just six minutes, but Brighton defender Adam Webster levelled the game in injury time before the interval.

Ademola Lookman immediately restored Leicester's lead on the stroke of half time, but they were unable to find a third goal after Enock Mwepu drew his side back level with 20 minutes to go, seeing the tie go to a shootout as a result.

James Maddison and Barnes converted the first two penalties for Brendan Rodgers's side and Neal Maupay was denied by the crossbar to give them an advantage, before Patson Daka and Ricardo Pereira continued the Foxes' perfect record and Danny Ward saved Mwepu's effort to see his team through.

The Midlands side reached the final 16 by defeating Millwall 2-0 away from home, thanks to goals from Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho.

They now go into the quarter-final draw that will take place on Saturday, with fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford all still in the competition alongside League One outfit Sunderland.
