Grenoble beat Marseille on penalties in Coupe de France

Grenoble stun Marseille on penalties

Grenoble have pulled off a shock win over Marseille on penalties to progress to the last 32 of the Coupe de France.

Florian Thauvin missed the crucial penalty for the Ligue 1 side after they drew 3-3 in normal time, while Grenoble scored all five of theirs to win 5-4 after a dramatic 120 minutes of action.

Marseille took an early lead with a superb goal from Andre-Pierre Gignac, who darted down the left-hand side before sharply cutting in to the penalty box and finishing neatly past the goalkeeper.

Their lead was short-lived as Grenoble equalised when Mourad Nasrallah tapped the ball under Brice Samba from close range, but Gignac got his second shortly after when a defensive error allowed him to burst through on goal and neatly slide the ball into the bottom corner.

After half time Grenoble equalised again when Fares Hachi bundled the ball in after Nicolas N'Koulou blocked an initial effort on the line.

Both sides chased a winner in normal time and Marseille wasted a great chance just after the hour mark when Thauvin missed an open goal from a few yards out.

Brice Dja Djedje then had a golden opportunity in the last minute but blazed over from the centre of the box.

Grenoble almost snatched a shock lead in extra time when Hamadi Ayari forced a save from Samba after a goalmouth scramble, but it was the visitors who moved back in front when substitute Andre Ayew fired the ball in after being set up by Dja Djedje.

Grenoble managed to find a leveller in the 120th minute when defender Selim Bengriba headed in from close range to send the game to penalties, and it was Nasrallah who converted the final spot kick to send Grenoble through.
