Evian TG fightback earns Montpellier HSC draw

Evian TG fight from 2-0 down to draw with Montpellier HSC in Ligue 1.

Evian TG came back from two goals down to draw with Montpellier HSC at Parc des Sports d'Annecy on Saturday.

The visitors led 2-0 just after the break thanks to goals from Victor Hugo Montano and Remy Cabella.

However, Daniel Wass and Pape Amodou Sougou netted in quick succession to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

The away side should have been ahead inside the opening five minutes of the match when Siaka Tiene played Montano through in a one-on-one situation, but the striker could only blast his effort high over the bar.

Despite the hosts' pressure, Montpellier had another chance in the 14th minute when Cabella teed up Anthony Mounier, who fired into the side-netting from an acute angle.

Evian had their first chance of the match 10 minutes later when Wass forced Geoffrey Jourdren into pushing his powerful effort past the post.

Montano had another chance in the 32nd minute when he was slipped through, but his shot on the angle was touched behind by Bertrand Laquait.

However, Montano soon gave his side the lead five minutes later when he ran onto a superb reverse pass from Djamel Bakar before slotting the ball into the back of the net on the right.

Montpellier doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half when Cabella got away from his marker with some stepovers before slamming a low effort into the near corner of the net after being slipped through by Montano.

Evian got themselves back into the match with 16 minutes left to play when Wass smacked a free kick from the edge of the D into the top right corner of the net.

The hosts found an equaliser four minutes later when Youssouf Sabaly dribbled down the left of the box before thumping a low cross to the edge of the six-yard area where Sougou was on hand to turn it home.

Scenes turned bizarre late in the match when Tiene was sent off for dissent by the referee despite having already been substituted.

Evain jump to ninth in Ligue 1, while Montpellier remain 13th.
