Cristiano Ronaldo: 'I don't regret Wayne Rooney red card at World Cup 2006'

Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo admits that he does not regret getting his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney sent off at World Cup 2006.

Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that he does not regret getting his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney sent off at World Cup 2006.

The current England captain was sent off in his side's quarter-final clash with Portugal for an apparent stamp on defender Ricardo Carvalho, after which Ronaldo gestured at the referee to persuade him to produce a red card.

Portugal went on to win the match with a penalty shootout, but Ronaldo insists that the issue did not cause a problem between himself and Rooney.

"I don't regret what I did because when you play for your country, you defend your colours," Ronaldo told BBC Sport.

"I didn't do nothing bad. He understood my point of view, let's speak about the present, let's win trophies, let's play together like we did.

"We were still friends. People create big dramas that never exist."

Ronaldo has recently admitted that he misses playing alongside England's record goalscorer.
