Roy Hodgson warns fringe players

Roy Hodgson says that England's fringe players will get a chance to impress against Chile this evening, but warns of the consequences should they fail to deliver.

England manager Roy Hodgson has warned some of his players that a bad performance against Chile this evening could spell the end of their World Cup dreams.

The South American nation visit Wembley for the first time since Marcelo Salas scored twice in a 2-0 win back in February 1998.

Southampton duo Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana are both expected to win their first caps tonight, while Everton starlet Ross Barkley is also likely to feature.

Although the 66-year-old coach said that he will not judge any players based solely on their performance, he added that they could squander their chance to earn a place in his 23-man squad next summer.

"To some extent, you get a feeling for what they have to offer from the moment they step into the camp," The Mirror quotes Hodgson as saying. "You see them on the training field, performing at a higher level than they do at their club.

"Unfortunately, you can never get away from the fact that rehearsals can be as good as you like – it's when they step out on stage on the first night that it really counts.

"I'd like to think I will make my judgements on these players not purely on their success or relative failure during the 90 minutes. But it's going to be a big night for them and, unfortunately, if they do fail spectacularly and do really badly, it will be held against them."

The Three Lions face Germany on Tuesday.
